Feed Trial : Soy vs. Soy-free

In May, we bought our first flock of 300 organic broiler chicks. They spent a couple weeks in the 'brooder' building before being old enough to move to the pasture, where they were moved to fresh pasture every day. In 2017 we raised three flocks total.

Part of the set-up we have at Fertrell (the company who’s land we’re renting) is that they’re interested is running various trials on their products, to show how they improve performance. Every farmer should be running side-by-side, small scale trials on their own farms, to compare how different equipment, breeds, feeds, minerals/additives, animal spacing, (you name it) works in their system. Most farms don’t though, because, well frankly, it’s a pain. It takes time to set up a trial well, to collect meaningful data, and to continue the trial through completion without interfering with something.

The goal is to run several of these types of trials every year. Here’s the report I wrote for our most recent trial, where we compared how 3 different types of feed performed.

If you’ve raised animals (chickens or otherwise) what has been your experience with soy or soy-free feed? If you’re a soy-free human, what’s your response to these trials? And what are other things you (farmer or not) wonder about, that you think would make for a good trial? We’re interested, let us know.
